Lip Lift, Lip Reduction & Lip Augmentation In-depth

‘Whether your lips are too thin, too full, or are drooping, Toronto Plastic Surgeon Dr. Lawrence Tong can help attain your goals’

Lip Lift

In a youthful upper lip, approximately 2mm of the upper teeth is seen when the mouth is relaxed and slightly open. Youthful lips should additionally have a measure of poutiness and vibrant fullness.

As a person gets older, the upper lip ages by becoming progressively longer, and the upper teeth become hidden. Additionally, the lip curls inward, losing some its natural pout. The appearance of a thin, long upper lip and lack of tooth show is a telltale sign of aging.

A lip lift helps to correct the appearance of a long upper lip by elevating it back to a higher position, restoring natural pout, and re-establishing normal tooth show.

A variation of the lip lift is the Corner lip lift. This procedure can benefit patients with a downward frown at the corners of the mouth, by elevating it to a neutral position or even upward orientation.

Lip Reduction

Some patients feel that their lips are too full, and wish to have them reduced. Lip reduction in these patients is generally straightforward and highly successful.

In recent years, Toronto plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Tong has seen many patients seeking help for distorted lips after they have undergone silicone injections to the lips. Dr. Tong does not recommend free silicone injections for any type of cosmetic purposes due to the risk of irreversible, long-term complications. The free silicone can migrate unpredictably, which induces scarring leading to distortion, numbness, and stiffness. In these cases, the lips may be reduced to a normal size, but there may be residual silicone remaining in the lip that cannot be removed without destroying the normal appearance of the lips. Dr. Tong will be very candid in discussing your situation and expected outcomes from silicone distorted lip correction surgery.

Lip Augmentation with Fillers or Fat Transfer

Lip augmentation refers to lip enhancements that make the lips fuller. The most common method of accomplishing lip augmentation is with soft tissue fillers such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®. Another popular option for a more permanent result is undergoing micro fat grafting (fat transfer) to the lips.

Lip Reduction and Lip Lift Procedure Details

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, in Dr. Tong’s office. It is a minor procedure, and takes less than 30 minutes to complete. In some cases of challenging lip reduction (silicone injected lips), Dr. Tong may recommend that the surgery be performed under IV sedation.

Dr. Tong performs the lip lift by making a small incision along the bottom edge of the base of the nose. A small amount of skin is removed and the upper lip is lifted and slightly everted. Dr. Tong meticulously places the stitches and the procedure is complete.

Dr. Tong performs the corner lip lift by making a small incision near the corner of the mouth; he removes a small wedge of skin to change the direction of the corner from down turned to neutral or slightly upwards direction.

Dr. Tong performs a lip reduction by strategically marking the areas for removal. The incisions are planned on the inside edge of the lip (the mucosa), so that they are hidden from view. The areas of mucosa are removed. In cases of silicone injection, scar and free silicone may also be encountered and removed. Temporary stitches are placed to judge the aesthetic result; more tissue is removed if necessary. Once Dr. Tong is satisfied with the appearance, stitches are placed to close the incisions.
